Today I learned that Peter Medak ended up going on an after-hours bar crawl with Peter O’Toole to discuss The Ruling Class (the actor held the rights to Peter Barnes’ play at the time), and when they were done, O’Toole drunkenly called his manager and gave him 24 hours to set up a deal for the film (which United Artists offered Medak the next day).
